Lal Mirch Powder (noun.) Chillies or Tepin or Chiltepin pepper is one of the reputed oldest varieties of chillies used in the World. It is called Mother chilli and was initially grown in northern Mexico, Arizona and Texas. The popular variety of Chilli powder (in Hindi Lal Mirch Powder) used in Indian cuisine is the Guntur chilly that is dark red and is a rich source of capsaicin. 

Another widely used variety is the Kashmiri mirch that is a variant growing in the place byadgi in Karnataka in India. It is less spicy but can give a fine red colour to the food or curry.
